Hi, we're Social Dog

Mostly that means hi, I'm Suraya 👋🏽 the person behind everything you see here. And this is Cricket, my first dog and loml.

 

 

In January of 2024, my partner and I brought home a very cute, very small chihuahua mystery mix from Houston. It was winter in Vancouver and our tiny Texan girl was like, "Y'all, thanks for the rescue but idk if this climate is for me" (direct quote).

 

 

I scoured the city and internet for sweaters to keep her warm on walks, but nothing I found was quite right. I wanted something that:

• Suited her colourful, fun-loving personality
• Reflected my passion for design and beauty in everyday things
• Aligned with my values around more sustainable, circular consumption

As an avid sewist and someone who loves a project, I started drafting her vests and sweaters with my leftover fabric.

 

 

Now, one thing I had underestimated about getting a puppy is that suddenly everyone talks to you on the street, even more so if the pup is wearing a cute sweater. Cricket made me so social. Strangers became neighbours, neighbours became friends, and walks together turned into the best part of the day.

 

The sweaters improved, the friendships grew, and somewhere along the way, I looked around at my tech career and thought, “is this really what I want to be doing with my one precious life?”. The answer was a pretty easy no. And Social Dog grew out of that: a cold chihuahua, a heartwarming community, and a keen desire to spend my days putting something good into the world.
